In 1977 Trichy district in Tamilnadu was reeling under the worst floods faced in that area. A group of university students was moved by the hardship faced particularly by the poor and was motivated to help the flood affected. From this awakening the People’s Solidarity Association (PSA) was formed and registered as a Society in 1980 to continue to help and work with the poor and disadvantaged.
The initial ideological plank of PSA rested on the belief that marginal groups in the rural areas be conscientised and through this be oriented towards negotiating situations in their own favour. Few years later however, it was realized that the poor need not only awareness, but also sufficient and appropriate skills, to attain sustainable livelihood.
PSA strives to bring about positive change in the quality of life of the poor. With a holistic approach to poverty alleviation, which is reflected in the span of its programmes, PSA believes that economic development, improved health care, education and organic agriculture are inter-linking interventions in the effort to break the cycle of poverty.
